Nascar Drivers Team up with Breakaway for
Juvenile Center Outreach
March 2002
Nascar drivers Hank Parker Jr. and Lyndon Amick teamed up with Breakaway to
offer a message of hope to troubled youths at the Stonewall Jackson Youth
Development Center during the Charlotte area Breakaway Outreach. Stonewall
Jackson houses up to 150 youth offenders.
Hank Parker Jr. drives the #36 GNC LIVE WELL Dodge and Lyndon Amick drives
the #26 DR. PEPPER Chevrolet. The GNC team also sent one of their race cars
to the facility for the kids to get a tour of a real Nascar stock car.
At just 18 years old, Amick became the youngest driver to win a race at the
Daytona Motor Speedway when he posted a victory in the Goody's Dash Series.
That same year, Amick won three other races on that circuit and claimed the
series championship. During the 2000 season, the Mooresville, North Carolina
resident won his first ARCA circuit race. In 2001, Hank Jr. scored his first
career NBS win in April at California Speedway in his 73rd NBS start. He
also finished 15th in NBS drivers' points standings.
The drivers talked about life's struggles on and off the track and used
their driving experiences to illustrate the need to make right choices. Hank
communicated the assurance that God gives us in dangerous situations, noting
that when Jesus is the Lord of your life, you can conquer your fears and
achieve success.
The outreach also included a basketball tournament, a drama presentation by
Metro Charlotte Master's Commission, and a concert by Atlanta based
recording artists Picnic With Fish.
